Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo for sale

The Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo for sale is an endangered Australian cockatoo named after Ivan Carnaby. Found only in southwestern Australia, it is a beloved icon but faces major threats.

Scientific Name and Description

Known scientifically as Calyptorhynchus latirostris, it is also called the short-billed black cockatoo due to its stubby beak shape. This species has black plumage with distinct white cheek patches and tail band.

Breeding and Life History

Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo for sale breed from July to February, nesting in Eucalyptus tree hollows in a region called the Wheatbelt. The female typically lays two eggs, but only one chick survives. Both parents incubate eggs and feed the chick for around 18 months until fledged. These birds mate for life.

Appearance – Sexual Dimorphism

Males and females show subtle differences in appearance. Females have pale gray eye rings and light beaks, while males have reddish eye rings and all-black bills. Their legs are gray and they have a small head crest. Adults reach about 23 inches in length.

Behavior and Communication

Known for their loud wailing calls, these highly social birds feed and travel together in flocks. Food calls, alarm calls, and mating calls are also part of their vocal repertoire. Their playful nature can be observed during foraging.

Diet and Foraging

Their diet consists primarily of seeds and plants from Eucalyptus, Banksia, Hakea, and other native trees. They use their big beaks to extract seeds from pods. Foraging on the ground occurs when needed.

Threats and Conservation

Habitat loss has caused severe declines. Other threats include lack of nesting hollows, competition for resources, illegal poaching, and predation. Conservation efforts aim to replant trees and restore vital breeding areas.

Suitability as Pets

Their are in danger status means availability as pets is limite. Noisy vocalizations may disturb neighbors. Providing their specialized diet can be challenging. Their best hope is protection of native habitat.
